Footprints on cork flooring
Q: Our kitchen has brown cork flooring that had a sealer on it, but now shows many footprints. How do I clean it and seal it again and keep it from more damage? –Colleen
Your options depend largely on what type of cork flooring you have and whether it was sealed by the manufacturer or installer. The flooring can be either natural or synthetic cork. Synthetic cork is generally sealed by the manufacturer and often has a coating of wax. Natural cork might be sealed by the installer, possibly with water-based polyurethane. If you know who installed the flooring or made it, you should try and find out what cleaning methods and sealant are recommended.
If you can’t track down the sealant type, the best bet is to consult a flooring professional to examine the cork and do the cleaning and resealing. This time, ask questions and take notes so you can do it yourself when the floor becomes soiled again. One thing you can do is test for wax. Put a few drops of mineral spirits (paint thinner) on an inconspicuous area of the floor. Wait a few minutes and wipe the treated area with a clean, white rag; if the rag picks up a yellowish or brown stain, the floor has been waxed and the sealant choices are limited (polyurethane sealers will not adhere to wax).
When you do get the floor cleaned and resealed, use area rugs to help protect high-traffic areas. Cork floors with a lot of surface damage can be sanded and refinished much like a hardwood floor, but this is definitely a job for an experienced refinisher.

Looking For Tips On Improving Indoor Air Quality For Allergy Suffers?
May 17th, 2012
Pollen, dander, dust and mold are unpleasant airborne particles that will leave allergy sufferers feeling tired, itchy and irritated. Fortunately, improving indoor air quality will help alleviate the allergy symptoms and increase your overall health. Improving indoor air quality is not a difficult task if you have the right information and tools.
Dehumidifier
A high level of humidity increases mold and mildew growth, which aggravates allergies, creates a musty aroma, and may even lead to damage to your home. Furthermore, too much humidity causes the air in your home to feel sticky and damp. Dehumidifiers combat high humidity by removing the moisture present in your home’s air. They’re especially useful during the heating season, when indoor air tends to become much drier than during the humid cooling months.
Air Purifier
Microscopic particles floating in the air can lead to an increase in allergy symptoms and compromise indoor air quality. Fortunately, air purifiers trap these contaminants via a filter while releasing the cleansed air back into your home. A whole-house air purifier can be added to existing HVAC systems and will provide comprehensive air cleaning protection to your entire home.
Ventilation
A home with proper ventilation generally sees a reduction of air impurities such as dust, dander and fungus spores that can aggravate allergy symptoms. Furthermore, home ventilation systems alleviate stuffy and stale air while increasing the amount of fresh air that goes through the home. A quick and free way to ventilate your home is to open windows. Unfortunately, this isn’t a viable option during extreme heat or cold.
Humidifier
When your home’s air is too dry, you will begin to experience an increase in dry skin, irritated throat and eyes, and chapped lips. Furthermore, dry air creates static electricity, which will cause an unpleasant static shock. Adding moisture to the air with a humidifier eliminates these unpleasant occurrences while improving indoor air quality.

Panasonic Verifies the Deodorizing Effects of Air Purifiers with 'nanoe' Electrostatic Atomized Water Particles on Pet …
May 11th, 2012Osaka, May 9, 2012 – (JCN Newswire) – Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has verified the deodorizing effects of air purifiers equipped with a generator of nanoe, nano-sized electrostatic atomized particles produced by applying high voltage to water, in actual pet shops underharsh conditions where pets continually emit odors. This verification was achieved through collaboration with Professor Megumi Mitsuda, Director of the Odor Research Center, School of Informatics, Daido University.
Japan is now in the midst of anunprecedented pet boom. A public opinion survey shows that 34.3%(1) of respondents have a pet, and other research shows that 72%(2) of the pet owner respondents keep their pets indoors. As pets live with their owners in the same space, odor problemshave come to the surface(3).
Getting full cooperation from two pet shops, Panasonic Ecology Systems Co., Ltd., a Panasonic group company, and Daido University conducted joint research and verified that air purifiers equipped with a generator ofnanoe can remove odors from the air and fabric even under harsh conditions.
The Company will continue to develop advanced products to improve indoor air quality (IAQ)(4), aiming to contribute to provision of healthy and comfortable living spaces and to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
The research results will be presented at the 36th Human Environment System Symposium (Nagoya) held in Daido University on December 1 and 2, 2012.
Verification method
In the cage room at the back of each pet shop, odor concentrations(*5) in the air and fabric after a week of operating nanoe air purifiers and those after being left for a week without operating the purifiers were compared.
Verification results
The verification results show that the pet odor concentration in the air can be reduced to 14.4% of that before operating the nanoe air purifiers (Efficiency of deodorization: 85.6%). The pet odor concentration in the fabric can be reduced to 25.7% of that in the fabric left without operating the air purifiers (Prevention efficiency: 74.3%).
